A recent report by Francesco Avvisati, an analyst of education reports for the OECD and the PISA, has revealed that the implementation of Information Communication Technology or the ICT has not been able to prove itself a better way of getting better education as it partially became unable to equally educate the strong and weak students and the problem still remains as a dominant one.
He says "There are many people involved in translating the promise of technology into a tangible benefit for students, and as a consequence there are many possible leaks in the pipe where things can go wrong."
According to the report, the teacher-student relationship is one of the factors that has not been amply used as well as the effective implementation of technology. Avvisati also pointed out the present scenario of the utilisation of technology in the classrooms.
Let's See What The Research Reveals
The schools of the US; the UK; Norway; New Zealand; Australia were sincerely concerned about the incorporation of technology in their classrooms. Though they implemented technology in their curriculum, the result was not at all satisfactory as there were not any sign of notable improvement. But Korea has shown impressive results though only 42% of the students use technology in schools. It is rather an astounding fact that the pupils of Korea have successfully performed in both pen-and-papers and in digital platforms. They are better equipped with a computer and its aspects than the mentioned countries.
So, it is quite evident that, a particular distance between the students and the digital education has been created. How can they be met? Let’s take a look:
What Went Wrong From The Beginning?
First of all, the purpose of the implementation of technology in classrooms was not considered deeply. Rather this was speculated that technology has to be implemented into the classrooms. Even the teachers; the industry professionals and the stakeholders were unable to show their definite anticipation from teaching.
The excessive use of the digital components led to the lack of the complementary resources utilisation. For example, the teachers even remained adhered to the digital ‘style’ of teaching rather than the student-oriented teaching methodologies.
Only the clear reason of applying technology can establish effective ICT in the classrooms.
The Parental Control
The internet is a very risky place. It becomes more risky if the students are allowed full access to it. Various kinds of elements are there in the internet which can prove to be tremendously harmful for the child psychology. The children also get physically affected as the mind-engaging features of the internet allow them not to shift their mind into something else. So, parental involvement becomes a must before the permission to the digital way of learning.
It is reported by the OECD in the year 2010 that less than 10% users of the internet have been witnessed to use parental control and web-filtering software.
Constant checking of the children’s health and ample sleep is also essential for them.
Improvement Of The Teachers
According to Avvisati, the teachers’ profession is to be respected as well as their duty. The digital education should not only aim towards effective education of the pupils but also should keep in mind the professional improvement of the teachers.
The digital content should also assist the teachers to share a healthy way of education. It should also be able to monitor the teachers’ capability of teaching to themselves. It will become an innovative journey to the teachers which they themselves, by their expertise, can enrich more and more.
Innovation
Lastly and most importantly technology needs continuous innovation. The correct implementation of the relevant technology and the educators’ logical procedure of connecting the mind of the learners to education through innovative technology are highly required.
Avvisati’s Message
Avvisati says, "Integrating technology successfully in education is not so much a matter of choosing the right device, the right amount of time to spend with it, the best software or the right digital textbook. The key elements for success are the teachers, school leaders and other decision makers who have the vision, and the ability, to make the connection between students, computers and learning."
Avvisati warmly invites the teachers to share their views regarding the effectiveness of online education. He also encourages the parents to allow their children to use digital learning under their strict supervision. They should keep in mind that the internet should always be used for a healthy purpose. Education is being elevated by technology and not technology by education.
